We were pleased to demonstrate the interoperability work we’ve been doing with the US Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology. We worked with the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) and other partners to combine many different sensors in a single system. The combined sensors are used to inform situation managers as they react to and manage disasters or emergencies via a common operating picture dashboard application. From the press release:

SensorUp Demonstrates How to Combine Wearables to Keep First Responders Safer

Washington, D.C. – Canadian Internet of Things (IoT) developer SensorUp has demonstrated how wearables such as smart watches and shirts can work together to keep first responders safer in the field. The company has developed an IoT platform that configures smart devices to alert the user when he or she is approaching a dangerous situation. For example, if the sensor in one of the wearables detects dangerous gasses, it can send a message to the wearer via the smart watch to leave the area immediately.whitehouse-small

SensorUp demonstrated its platform and application this morning with the Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology (DHS S&T). The demonstration took place this morning in the US Capitol Building in Washington D.C. Developed with the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), the IoT platform shows that it is possible to combine smart watch alerts with other devices, including shirts that monitor the biometrics of first responders. The single situation management application makes it possible to more accurately monitor and warn the health and safety of these front-line workers. This method of combining devices is an example of the practical use of IoT.

The Open Geospatial Consortium standards were used to combine the disparate wearables and other sensors into single platform and application. Standards-compliance is critical in IoT, as it makes it possible to exchange data between disparate sensors.

Dr. Steve Liang, SensorUp founder and globally recognized Internet of Things expert, explained why working with standards is so important:

“SensorUp used the OGC SensorThings API, an OGC standard purpose-built for combining sensors while dealing with power, bandwidth, and connectivity constraints. Because we use the standard, when the need arises, the data being reported by completely different sensing systems can be combined. This is true even if the sensors go through areas without connectivity.”
