We are very excited to announce the City of Winnipeg benames our latest client, adopting Sensor Smart Cities Starter Kit. On August 29th, 10 Winnipeg citizens joined the Smart Citizens Workshop at the city hall and made their own sensors.
We were very excited to see some workshop participants (i.e., smart citizens!!) came to the workshop very well prepared!! They watched our YouTube tutorials before coming to the workshop and took them just a few minutes to get their air quality sensors up and running. Great job! For the first time, citizens of Winnipeg are able to access hyper-local air quality data and know their environment better. They have integrated the real-time SensorThings API to the existing open data portal. These datasets are also available in the City of Winnipeg Open Data Portal.
These distributed sensors already have discovered some very interesting phenomenon. For example, on September 7th from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm, three sensors in St. James East, Point Douglas and River East observed higher PM2.5 readings while two other sensors in the Transcona neighborhood didn’t. We do not know what made the spike of the air quality readings, but now we have a beautiful dataset available allowing citizens to discuss, scientists to research, and every Winnipeg citizens to make the city a better place to live.
