SensorUp Featured in fedscoop News

SensorUp’s work with the Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology was recently featured in fedscoop news. Fedscoop, a news source focusing on US federal government happenings, reported on our recent interoperability demo, which showcased connecting numerous devices in a single platform, from the commercially-available Hexoskin, to tailored sensors made just for the demo. Hexoskin and SensorUp partnered to create an IoT-based system designed to help keep first responders safer. The project was funded by the Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate to demonstrate how integrating existing IoT sensor technologies using a standards-based approach can support first responder missions.

The focus was on showing how fixed, deployed, and wearable sensors can be integrated in a single common operating picture. With a common operating picture, situation managers only need to access one screen to quickly learn what is going on in the field, and plan their response. Different response units, such as fire, hazmat, and police, can coordinate their efforts and share information to respond better. Our Homeland Security sponsors and emergency managers benefit from using open standards to connect their devices. There are three main advantages:

1. The standard is open, so it can be used by any application or device maker, and you’re never locked in to a single vendor.
2. Any number of devices or types of devices can be connected in the same platform running the standard. This means all your information is accessible from a single access point. This can make IoT apps faster: connected data is stored in a single platform, so it can be accessed via fewer requests.
3. The standard, OGC SensorThings API, is designed specifically for IoT. As such, it performs particularly well in situations faced in IoT. For example, it gathers and reports data in real time, and it supports devices running in low-power situations.
