In a story about the big benefits of Smart Cities, Canada’s National Post featured SensorUp’s Smart Cities Starter Kit!

In the article, SensorUp CEO Dr. Steve Liang explains how smart cities are arising from the emerging combination of low-cost sensors, ubiquitous networks, and unlimited computing power. We now collectively have the ability to measure our environment like never before, and the opportunity to use the data to improve city services, find more efficient ways to provide services, and automate repeating tasks. Forward-thinking cities are taking this opportunity to improve the quality of life for their citizens. Read more here: Big data will mean big benefits for smart cities

SensorUp’s Smart Cities Starter Kit gets municipalities started on this in two ways:

  1. It engages citizens in deploying hardware. This helps citizens understand, advocate, and contribute to Smart Cities. And it helps the city rapidly deploy sensors. Here at SensorUp we deployed over 30 in a weekend.
  2. It provides the Smart Cities Platform to manage all the data coming in from these sensors. It also provides sensor management dashboards, and a public-facing website that lets citizens explore the data they’re collectively creating.

Best of all, the Platform we provide is fully open standards-based. This means:

  • Cities get to explore a Smart Cities Platform without being locked in to a vendor — a major risk that would increase costs and stifle future development.
  • All sensor data can be combined in the Platform, air quality, water quality, groundwater levels, environmental information, situation management sensors. You name it, it can be combined. That way, the city can be understood as a system rather than as silos, and even more knowledge can be gained, efficiencies found, and services improved 🙂

The bottom line, we’re super happy to see more people across Canada are taking an interest in Smart Cities! Keep up the good work, and let us know if you want to try a standards-based Smart Cities Platform!
